Simplification. Blocks System.

The block system is a method Javier uses to teach students the fundamentals of structure, proportions, and movement in the human figure. Because it’s so straightforward, it provides a solid starting point for developing the figure step by step while learning anatomy.

All of Javier’s courses are organized to be easy for students to follow. They begin by covering the basics, then gradually move into more detailed explanations of each body part until the entire figure is complete. These courses are ideal for both beginners and more advanced sculptors. Javier adapts his method to range from very simple to more complex, allowing you to choose how far you’d like to go.

The Blocks system applies the same method used by drawers when sketching a figure but translates it into three dimensions. It is an excellent way to maintain proportions, establish the initial volume, and adjust the balance and pose to achieve a natural and dynamic feeling. While it may seem basic at first, the system becomes straightforward once you become familiar with it.

This method relies on simple geometric shapes, making it an effective and accessible starting point. However, to create a realistic figure from blocks, it’s essential to understand that they act as a guide for setting up the work, it is just a structure we lay out to help us at the beginning.

The blocks not only help to establish the pose, proportions but also the key anatomical landmarks we need to construct the figure. From this foundation, refining the figure by sculpting and referencing your source material is crucial for achieving a lifelike representation. The blocks provide the framework, but the final details come from careful observation and adjustment. To start, let’s see how the blocks can help you establish proportions.

Here is a time lapse example of blocks construction on a contraposto figure. Notice that as a claiper, I use a 6 x 6 cm piece of paper ( Head size for 1/4 scale). This is the way a keep my measuments right.
